ABOUT OUR CHURCH
Our
Polish family church is Parafia sw Marcina, 87-423 Wrocki. The Church of Saint Martin (St. Marcin).
This Gothic-style church in Wrocki was erected near the end of the 13th century. In the early part of the 15th century,
the Dobudowana Tower was built added to the church. During the Polish-Swedish War in the 16th century, much of the church
was damaged. Because of this, there was a rebuilding of the church in the 18th century. More work was done in
1888 and in 1925, giving the church its current appearance. We are praying to once again restore our beautiful church by
2010. The oldest relics in the church are two gothic church bells, from the 15th and 16th centuries, as well as other
icons that date from the 12th century.
The area where our church is located is near
a small village in Poland known as Plachoty, in the church district of Wrocki, located in the larger district of Brodnica.
It is in north-central Poland, about ten miles up the road from Golub-Dobrzyn and about 30 miles east of the historic city
of Torun, and about 90 miles north-west of the capital city of Warsaw. The area was originally founded by the Teutonic
Knights in the Middle Ages, when it belonged to the Knight's District Commander in Golub. In 1483, the land was
sold by the non-commissioned officer of the highest rank to Jan Brandt. It has been an area of much violence throughout
history, and has changed hands often, with control being bounced back & forth from the Teutonic Knights, Prussian,
German, Russian and Polish rulers.
